‘They were his whole world’: Jeffco father of 5 shot with toddler son remembered as loving family man

A 34-year-old father of five who was fatally gunned down in front of his children is being remembered as a loving man who took care of his family and his kids.

“That was his life,’’ said his mother, Michelle Robinson. “They were his whole world.”

Alonzo Montez Robinson, affectionately known as Twenty, leaves behind four sons, ages 1 to 16, and his first daughter, who was born just three weeks before Robinson was killed.

Robinson’s son, 1-year-old Alontavious, was also shot multiple times. He remains hospitalized at Children’s of Alabama and family said he faces multiple surgeries.

The family has started a GoFundMe to help with Robinson’s burial and the medical care of Alontavious.

“It doesn’t make sense,’’ Michelle Robinson said. “It shouldn’t have come to this.”

The gunfire erupted just before 2 p.m. Saturday in the public housing community in the 7800 block of Wisdom Way in northeastern Jefferson County.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched on a report of multiple people shot, said Jefferson County sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money.

They arrived to find Robinson unresponsive. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:09 p.m.

Alontavious was rushed to Children’s in critical condition.

Money said the investigation showed there had been an ongoing neighborhood dispute that resulted in an argument Saturday afternoon.

Family said Robinson’s apartment was right next to the housing complex’s playground. A dispute between juveniles had taken place there and Robinson was targeted because he tried to diffuse the situation.

“He was going to look out for all kids no matter who they were,’’ Michelle Robinson said. “He was a good son, a good father and he didn’t bother nobody.”

Sheriff’s officials charged 19-year-old Adaryon Coachman with capital murder in Robinson’s death and first-degree assault in the shooting of Alontavious.

The charge is a capital crime because the victim was killed in front of his children. At least one of Robinson’s other children was at the scene but was not injured.

Robinson’s family plans to hold his funeral on July. Donations to the GoFundMe can be made here.
